RTX 5080 Reportedly Fails After Using DLSS 5 Mods in GTA V

A user reports their graphics card died after a day of using DLSS 5 mods. TweakTown notes high power draw may be the cause.
Key points
- A user reports their RTX 5080 failed after running DLSS 5 mods in GTA V.
- DLSS 5 can increase GPU power consumption by up to 50 percent compared to older versions.
- Experts suggest the high power draw may be exposing design flaws in power delivery.
A new report suggests that NVIDIA's latest DLSS 5 technology may be causing hardware failures in RTX 50 series graphics cards. According to TweakTown, a user on the r/RTX5080 subreddit claims their MSI GeForce RTX 5080 Ventus 3X stopped working entirely after running DLSS 5 modifications in Grand Theft Auto V.
The incident occurred on the second day of using the modded feature, with the system freezing and displays flashing violently without warning. While this is not the first such claim, it adds to a growing list of reports linking DLSS 5 to GPU instability, prompting caution among enthusiasts.
Failure occurred during gameplay
The user reported that the failure happened five minutes into a gaming session at approximately 80 frames per second. Prior to this, the card had been functioning normally for about a month without the new AI features enabled. The sudden crash left the computer unresponsive, forcing the user to replace the component immediately.
Since the incident, the owner has stopped using DLSS 5 mods and intends to wait for official game support. They noted that the modding community is currently testing the technology in titles that do not yet have native integration, which may contribute to unstable behavior.
Power consumption is the key factor
The primary concern behind these reports is the significant increase in power draw associated with DLSS 5. Testing by Tom's Hardware revealed that the new technology can increase GPU power consumption by up to 50 percent compared to previous versions. This surge in demand places substantial stress on the power delivery systems of modern graphics cards.
While modern NVIDIA GPUs have robust protection features, the high computational load of DLSS 5 may be exposing latent design flaws. Critics point to previous issues with the 12VHPWR power connector, suggesting that the new workload might be exploiting weaknesses in how power is managed under extreme conditions.
Caution advised for GPU owners
There is currently insufficient evidence to confirm that DLSS 5 is the definitive cause of these failures. However, the correlation between high power usage and reported deaths is concerning. Until more concrete data is published, users with RTX 50 series cards may want to avoid the technology to protect their hardware.
