The Galaxy S24 remains a capable device, but its current market price makes it a difficult recommendation compared to newer mid-range options.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 launched in early 2024 as a premium flagship with a price tag of $800. More than two and a half years later, the phone remains technically proficient, yet its value proposition has shifted significantly. While renewed, unlocked units can be found for around $350, listings in better condition or with higher storage capacities often exceed $400. This pricing places the device in direct competition with brand-new mid-range smartphones that offer more recent hardware and longer software support lifecycles.

For most buyers, spending $400 to $500 on a two-year-old flagship is less attractive than purchasing a newer mid-range model. Engadget notes that while the S24 is not outdated, it is not necessarily the most sensible purchase today. It remains a viable option only if the price is considerably lower, particularly for users who prioritize a compact form factor with high performance over the latest features.

Performance Remains Strong Despite Age

The S24 features a 6.2-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, offering a compact experience that many newer phones lack. The US model utilizes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which continues to handle demanding games and everyday apps with ease. It also retains flagship features such as wireless charging and IP68 dust and water resistance. However, international versions may use the Exynos 2400 chip, so buyers must verify the specific model before purchasing to ensure they are getting the expected performance.

The camera system remains a standout feature, featuring a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a dedicated 3x telephoto lens. This setup offers a clear advantage over mid-range phones that rely on digital cropping for zoom. Despite this, the hardware is not flawless. Low-light photography can still appear dark and noisy compared to competing flagships, a limitation that persists even with the latest software updates.

Battery Health Is The Main Risk

The primary concern when buying a refurbished S24 is the condition of the 4,000mAh battery. While the phone lasted approximately 24.5 hours in video rundown tests when new, lithium-ion batteries degrade over time. Cosmetic grades like "excellent" do not guarantee a replaced battery. If you cannot inspect the device in person, you should ask the seller about the minimum guaranteed battery health and whether the warranty covers battery failures.

Samsung’s official "Re-Newed" program mitigates this risk by including a new battery, genuine parts, and a one-year manufacturer warranty. However, the certified S24 starts at $519, which is only $80 cheaper than the certified refurbished S25 at $599. For many consumers, the small price difference does not justify sticking with the older model when the newer one offers a fresh battery and updated hardware.

Newer Alternatives Offer Better Value

Several alternatives released in early 2026 provide compelling reasons to look elsewhere. The Google Pixel 10a, for example, starts at $499 and offers a 6.3-inch 120Hz OLED display alongside a larger 5,100mAh battery. It also includes seven years of OS and security updates, providing a longer period of support than the S24. While the S24 has its merits, the Pixel 10a and similar devices offer a more secure long-term investment for most users.
