Ikea's New Bluetooth Speaker Trades Portability for Optical Input

Ikea has introduced the Badkruka, a new wireless speaker that shifts focus from extreme portability to fixed-location audio performance. Priced at $59.99 for the US market, the device marks a departure from the company’s earlier, ultra-compact Kallsup model. While it retains the affordable price tag, the Badkruka is significantly larger and designed to stay in one place rather than being carried around the house or outside.

As reported by The Verge, this new addition to Ikea’s audio lineup addresses a common limitation in budget speakers: the lack of direct wired connections. By including an optical input, the Badkruka allows users to connect it directly to televisions, home theater systems, or computers. This feature makes it a functional component of a larger audio setup, not just a standalone device for playing music from a smartphone.

A dedicated unit for fixed spaces

The physical design of the Badkruka reflects its stationary purpose. Standing almost seven inches tall, the boxy unit lacks a rechargeable battery, meaning it must remain plugged into a wall outlet to operate. This trade-off removes the convenience of wireless mobility but allows Ikea to allocate more resources toward the internal audio components and connectivity options. It is not intended for use in a backpack or a camping trip, but rather for a desk, shelf, or entertainment center.

Wired connectivity expands usage options

The most significant upgrade over standard Bluetooth speakers is the inclusion of a TOSLINK optical input. An optical cable is included in the box, allowing users to bypass Bluetooth entirely for a stable, low-latency connection to audio equipment.
