A luminous, tentacle-like formation that appeared in the night sky over parts of Europe quickly became a viral sensation, leading many social media users to speculate it was a missile strike toward Ukraine. However, this dramatic interpretation was quickly dispelled. Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed on September 18 that the object was actually the exhaust plume of a Soyuz-2.1b rocket, which had launched a classified satellite from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome the previous evening.

The confusion highlights how easily optical phenomena can be misinterpreted in the age of instant video sharing. While the shape looked alarming to onlookers, it is a well-known effect in the space industry. Experts pointed out that the visual signature matches perfectly with a routine ascent, rather than an attack, a distinction that is critical for maintaining accurate public information during times of geopolitical tension.

The science behind the space jellyfish

The glowing shape is caused by a specific interaction between sunlight and rocket exhaust, a phenomenon frequently referred to as the space jellyfish effect. It occurs when a rocket climbs high enough into the upper atmosphere to be hit by direct sunlight, while observers on the ground remain in the shadow of the Earth. As the exhaust plume expands rapidly in the thin air, it catches the light, creating a billowing, illuminated cloud that can resemble a jellyfish trailing tentacles.

This is not a rare or dangerous occurrence. Similar visuals have been documented during SpaceX Falcon 9 launches over Florida and California, as well as previous Soyuz missions from Russian and Kazakh spaceports. The effect is purely optical and harmless, serving as a reminder that the sky is often a canvas for natural and technological light displays rather than a warning sign of conflict.

The launch took place from Plesetsk, located in Russia’s Arkhangelsk region roughly 800 kilometers north of Moscow. This site is the country’s primary hub for military space activities. Throughout 2026, it has hosted a steady stream of Soyuz-2.1b missions carrying satellites for the Ministry of Defense. The typical flight path from Plesetsk is directed toward high-inclination orbits to the north, which is geographically inconsistent with claims of a strike on Ukraine, a country located to the south.

However, Russian officials have not confirmed this specific designation. They described the cargo only in general terms as serving the interests of the Ministry of Defense. The lack of transparency regarding the satellite's orbit and function is standard for military launches, but it leaves the public relying on independent trackers for verification.

The incident underscores the trade-off between national security opacity and public peace of mind. While the government is not required to disclose every detail of its space activities, the rapid spread of misinformation creates a vacuum that factual reporting must fill.
