Meta Display Glasses Switch to Audio Mode While Driving

A new automated setting turns off the visual display when you are in a car, allowing you to keep using the glasses for calls without distracting you from the road.
Meta has introduced an automated setting for its Ray-Ban Display glasses that detects when the wearer is in a moving vehicle and disables the visual display. This feature, known as Audio Only mode, ensures that the glasses do not distract drivers while still allowing them to handle hands-free calls and voice commands.
The update addresses a common concern for smart eyewear users: the temptation to check visual notifications while operating a car. By automatically switching to audio-only functionality, the device effectively becomes a standard pair of smart glasses, prioritizing safety over visual convenience during transit.
Automatic Detection Saves Manual Effort
Users do not need to remember to toggle modes every time they get behind the wheel. The Meta AI app uses the glasses' internal sensors to identify movement patterns consistent with driving. Once detected, the display turns off immediately. When the car stops and the user exits, the visual interface reactivates automatically.
Engadget notes that setup is straightforward, requiring users to enable Driving Detection within the device settings on their phone. The system may request access to phone sensors to assist with this detection process. For those who prefer manual control, a simple voice command can also toggle the audio-only state on or off.
Navigation Limitations Remain Strict
Despite the new safety feature, these glasses are not designed for turn-by-turn driving navigation. The current software only supports pedestrian-level directions. This is a significant trade-off, as the interface lacks the high-speed lane guidance and real-time traffic data required for highway travel.
Drivers should continue to rely on their vehicle's built-in GPS or smartphone maps for complex routes. The Audio Only feature is intended to reduce visual clutter and save battery life, not to replace traditional navigation tools. It serves as a safety measure rather than a functional upgrade for driving.
Battery and Distraction Benefits
Beyond safety, disabling the display offers practical advantages. It conserves battery power for when the visual features are actually needed, such as during a walk or commute. It also reduces the constant stream of visual notifications that can fragment attention.
