India's Data Center Boom Faces Energy and Cost Challenges

India is preparing for a dramatic increase in its digital infrastructure, with installed data center capacity expected to jump from 1.57 gigawatts in 2026 to nearly 8 gigawatts by 2030. This expansion is driven by a surge in government digital services and rising public demand for online connectivity, signaling a shift in how the country manages its critical computing resources.
The scale of this build-out is underpinned by substantial financial commitments, including $70 billion in ongoing investments and another $90 billion in announced projects. However, this rapid growth places immense pressure on the national power grid, raising urgent questions about energy efficiency and the long-term sustainability of such resource-intensive facilities.
Digital Services Drive Infrastructure Demand
The primary engine behind this expansion is the digitization of government operations and citizen services. As the National Informatics Centre establishes new facilities in major cities like Delhi, Pune, and Hyderabad, the need for continuous, high-speed connectivity grows. This infrastructure serves as the backbone for the country's digital economy, supporting everything from administrative records to real-time data processing.
Energy Consumption Raises Sustainability Concerns
A significant trade-off of this expansion is the massive increase in electricity demand. The Central Electricity Authority projects that data centers could consume up to 17 gigawatts of power by 2031-32. While the government promotes cleaner energy solutions, the sheer volume of power required for cooling and operations makes efficiency a critical challenge for maintaining sustainable growth.

According to the GN auto tech/cloud report on data center expansion, the sector is entering a phase where strategic planning is essential. Balancing the need for robust, secure computing capacity with environmental responsibility will determine the long-term viability of India's digital ambitions.
