India's Data Center Capacity Set to Quadruple by 2030

India is preparing for a massive expansion of its digital infrastructure, with data center power capacity expected to jump from 1.57 gigawatts to nearly 8 gigawatts within the next four years.
The rapid growth of India's digital economy is driving an unprecedented demand for computing power. According to a recent official factsheet, the country's installed data center capacity has already surged from 375 megawatts in 2020 to 1.57 gigawatts by August 2026. This trajectory suggests that the sector will more than quadruple its size by 2030, fundamentally altering the nation's energy landscape and digital service delivery capabilities.
Billions in investment fuel expansion
This infrastructure buildout is supported by substantial financial commitments, with an estimated $70 billion currently under way in ongoing investments. Another $90 billion in projects has been announced, signaling long-term confidence in the sector's viability. The primary engine behind this spending is the expansion of e-Governance and digital services, as citizens increasingly expect reliable, high-speed online access for essential services. This shift creates a constant need for robust infrastructure that can operate securely and at scale without interruption.
Government builds national backbone
The National Informatics Centre has played a pivotal role in establishing this backbone. It has deployed state-of-the-art National Data Centers in major hubs like Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bhubaneswar. Beyond these large facilities, the agency operates 37 smaller data centers in various state capitals. These sites provide the necessary digital services to government institutions at multiple levels, ensuring continuous operations through skilled onsite personnel who maintain the systems around the clock.
Energy demand poses significant challenge
However, this growth comes with a critical trade-off: a massive increase in electricity consumption. The Central Electricity Authority forecasts that data center demand alone could reach 17 gigawatts by 2031-32. This strain on the power grid forces the government to promote cleaner energy sources and efficient cooling systems.
