Xiaomi Launches 4K Color Security Camera for Low-Light Environments

Xiaomi has introduced the Smart Camera 5 Pro, a home security device designed to address a common limitation in budget cameras: the loss of color detail in low-light conditions. By combining an 8-megapixel primary sensor with a 4-megapixel secondary sensor, the device processes video to output 4K footage in full color around the clock. This approach ensures that users can see clear, detailed images at night rather than relying on the standard black-and-white infrared mode found in most competitors.
The camera is currently available through a crowdfunding campaign in China, priced at approximately $64, with a planned regular retail price of around $90. While the company has not yet confirmed a timeline for international availability, Xiaomi’s history of expanding its security product lines globally suggests that a wider release is likely. The device aims to provide high-resolution surveillance without the premium price tag typically associated with 4K-capable hardware.
Dual Sensors Drive Night Vision Quality
The core of this camera’s performance lies in its dual-sensor architecture. As reported by GN technics/smarthome (en-US), the system pairs an 8 MP main sensor with a 4 MP auxiliary sensor. This setup allows the device to generate 4K video using image-processing software, rather than relying solely on hardware zoom. The result is a consistent color output even in complete darkness, supported by specific night modes that include person detection and a red-light-free option for discreet monitoring.
This represents a significant step up from the previous Smart Camera C500 Pro, which relied on a single 5 MP sensor. The new configuration enables the camera to maintain clarity and detail during low-light scenarios, ensuring that movement and facial features remain distinguishable. For users who prioritize visual clarity over raw megapixel counts, this hybrid approach offers a practical solution for all-day and all-night monitoring.
Local Processing Reduces Cloud Dependency
To handle the increased data load from 4K video, the device features a 1.5-TOPS on-device AI chip. This processor manages tasks such as recognizing people and pets, as well as detecting specific sounds like crying, directly on the camera. By keeping this analysis local, the system reduces the need to stream raw video to cloud servers for every event, which can improve response times and lower bandwidth usage.
Connectivity is handled via dual-band Wi-Fi 6, ensuring stable data transfer for high-resolution streams. The camera also supports two-way voice communication and integrates with the Mijia smart home ecosystem. While the local processing capabilities are a strong privacy feature, the device still supports cloud and NAS storage alongside microSD cards. This means that while the brain of the operation stays on the device, the storage of footage can still be offloaded to external services if the user chooses.
Physical Shutter Addresses Privacy Concerns
Privacy remains a critical factor for home security buyers, and Xiaomi has included a physical lens shutter to allow users to completely block the camera’s view when needed. This hardware-level control provides a tangible assurance that the device is not recording, which is often a point of contention with software-only privacy modes. The camera also includes access controls to manage who can view the footage.
For those concerned about storage costs and power consumption during long recording sessions, the device includes an AOR recording mode. This feature is designed to reduce resource usage, making it more efficient for continuous monitoring. However, the trade-off is that the extent of data leaving the device ultimately depends on user settings, requiring owners to carefully configure their storage preferences to balance convenience with privacy.
