South Korea Turns to Private Firms for Space Debris Tracking

Hanwha Systems will build a new satellite and AI ground system to help monitor the growing clutter in low Earth orbit.

South Korea has contracted a major defense and technology firm to build the core hardware for its national space debris tracking network. Hanwha Systems signed a deal with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute to develop a surveillance satellite and a ground-based data center. This move marks a significant shift in how the country approaches space security, bringing private industry into a mission that was previously handled solely by government research agencies.

The urgency behind this project stems from the rapid increase in the number of satellites in low Earth orbit. As more spacecraft launch, the risk of collisions with defunct satellites, fragments, and even natural debris rises sharply. The new system aims to detect these objects and predict potential impacts before they can damage critical infrastructure or pose a danger to astronauts.

Building the orbital surveillance pair

Under the agreement, Hanwha Systems will construct a small satellite designed to orbit approximately 480 kilometers above the Earth. This spacecraft will carry an optical camera to continuously scan its surroundings, identifying objects in real time. Meanwhile, the company is developing a ground station that will ingest this visual data and process it using artificial intelligence.

The ground system will not rely on the satellite alone. It will cross-reference observations from multiple sources to calculate accurate trajectories and flag collision risks. By combining space-based imagery with other data streams, the system can provide a more comprehensive picture of the cluttered environment surrounding the planet.

Shifting space tasks to industry

This contract represents a broader trend in the global space sector, where governments are increasingly outsourcing development and operations to private companies. According to reporting from GN technics/space, this partnership allows the state to leverage private-sector speed and technological expertise. The Korea AeroSpace Administration oversees the project, ensuring it meets national security standards while relying on Hanwha for the engineering and integration work.

For Hanwha Systems, this is a strategic expansion into the space domain awareness market. The company stated that building these capabilities will help it develop core technologies for future space security projects. It also signals a move beyond traditional defense contracts into the emerging field of managing the safety of the orbital environment itself.

Expanding into lunar exploration

The debris tracking contract is part of a wider push by Hanwha into space exploration. Last month, the company signed a separate agreement with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute to develop a deployment mechanism for a lunar rover. This rover is intended to be carried on a Korean lunar lander, marking the firm's entry into deep-space hardware development.

There is a clear trade-off in this rapid expansion. While the company gains access to new markets and technology, it must manage the complexity of juggling multiple high-stakes projects simultaneously. Hanwha plans to apply lessons learned from the lunar rover project to its space AI solutions and low-Earth-orbit communications systems, aiming to create a cohesive suite of space technologies.
