A new report indicates that Russian state-sponsored actors are leveraging artificial intelligence to accelerate cyber operations against European and Ukrainian government targets, including the compromise of secure messaging accounts.
According to a report released by Anthropic, Russian state-sponsored hacking groups have integrated artificial intelligence tools into their cyber operations, significantly increasing the speed and scale of attacks against Ukrainian and European institutions. The company identified specific instances where AI was used to automate reconnaissance and evade security defenses, allowing actors to target government ministries, diplomatic missions, and defense-industrial supply chains with greater efficiency than traditional manual methods.
The report, which details the findings of an investigation into a specific threat actor, highlights that the attacks are not merely opportunistic but part of a structured espionage campaign. According to Anthropic, the system would track whether security defenses were successfully evaded and autonomously modify malware to circumvent existing detections.
