MG Selects Australia for Global Debut of New Electric Ute
MG has named Australia the world's first market for its new MGU9 electric ute, a vehicle designed to handle both heavy workloads and weekend camping trips without compromising on range or power.
MG, now part of the Chinese automaker SAIC, has chosen Australia as the exclusive first market for the launch of the MGU9 electric ute. While specific pricing and delivery dates remain undisclosed, the vehicle positions itself as a dual-purpose machine intended for both professional utility and recreational use.
The launch directly addresses long-standing skepticism in the Australian automotive market regarding the capability of electric vehicles. By emphasizing practical towing and off-road readiness, the brand aims to shift the perception that battery-electric trucks are limited to urban commuting or specific industrial fleets.
Capability designed for heavy loads
According to GN auto tech/ev, the MGU9 is engineered with a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, allowing it to pull caravans, boats, and heavy trailers. This specification is critical for Australian consumers who often rely on their vehicles for transporting significant loads, a requirement that has previously deterred many from considering electric options.
The truck also features a 6.6 kW vehicle-to-load system, enabling owners to power tools or camping equipment directly from the battery. This includes an external CCS2 outlet and three internal 2.2 kW outlets, turning the vehicle into a portable power source for remote locations where grid access is unavailable.
Battery range and charging speed
Powered by a 102.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, the MGU9 offers a WLTP range of approximately 430 km when not towing. The dual-motor setup produces 325 kW of power and 700 Nm of torque, supporting a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.8 seconds.
Charging infrastructure support includes 115 kW DC fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 20 to 80 percent in roughly 42 minutes. Standard 11 kW AC charging is also available for slower overnight or workplace charging scenarios. This range is notably higher than some current competitors, which often target niche industrial markets with shorter range limitations.
Interior features and safety standards
Inside the cabin, the vehicle prioritizes comfort with dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a JBL sound system. The driver’s seat offers heating, ventilation, and massage functions, while the front passenger seat and steering wheel are also heated. A 236-litre front trunk provides additional storage space beyond the rear tray.
Safety is addressed with a five-star ANCAP rating, a 360-degree camera system, and a hands-free automatic tailgate. The suspension system uses full-function four-wheel electronic air suspension to handle varied terrain, ensuring stability whether the truck is loaded with equipment or carrying passengers on unpaved roads.
