Windrose has released the computer-aided design files for all 1,023 parts of its E700 electric truck to the public at no cost. This move allows anyone with the right tools to understand, repair, or manufacture components for the vehicle, shifting the dynamic of ownership in a sector traditionally controlled by manufacturers.
The company argues that this transparency ensures the truck remains serviceable even if the manufacturer ceases operations. By providing the native design intent rather than just final shapes, Windrose aims to remove the dependency on a central support team for long-term maintenance.
Ensuring long-term vehicle serviceability
Heavy trucks are expected to operate for fifteen years, a timeframe that far exceeds the lifespan of many new electric vehicle startups. Customers often worry about parts availability if a company fails, a risk highlighted by the recent struggles of other electric truck makers. Windrose addresses this by releasing the full geometry of its proprietary components, ensuring that independent fabricators can produce replacements if the official supply chain breaks.
CEO Wen Han stated that customers should not be dependent on the company's continued responsiveness or existence. The goal is to create a situation where the truck outlives the manufacturer's ability to support it. This approach transforms the customer's relationship with the vehicle from a passive user to an active participant in its maintenance.
Detailed design data for engineers
The released files are not simplified exports but native parametric models, which include the original sketch constraints and dimensional relationships. According to GN auto tech/ev, this level of detail is crucial for a workshop trying to reproduce a part years later. It preserves the design intent, allowing engineers to understand how the part fits and functions within the larger assembly.
The package includes a detailed assembly tree and a manifest listing part names and quantities. This comprehensive data set enables independent repairers to identify and replace components without needing specific permission from Windrose. The terms explicitly state that repair, replacement, and modification are free for owners and independent workshops.
Limitations on manufacturing new vehicles
While repair and modification are unrestricted, creating new vehicles from these designs requires a separate agreement with Windrose. The company distinguishes between maintaining existing trucks and building new ones, noting that the latter is a conversation rather than a simple download. This trade-off protects the company's commercial interests while still empowering the repair ecosystem.
This strategy creates a robust service network that does not rely on a single corporate entity.
