Windrose Releases Free CAD Models for Its Electric Truck Parts

Windrose has published the design files for over 1,000 truck components, aiming to ensure vehicles remain repairable long after the company’s founding.
Windrose has released the computer-aided design models for 1,023 components of its E700 electric semi-truck to the public at no cost. This move allows independent workshops and owners to access the precise geometry needed to fabricate replacement parts, addressing a significant concern in the electric truck market.
The company argues that this transparency reduces the risk of vehicles becoming unusable if the manufacturer faces financial difficulties. By providing the underlying design intent rather than just finished shapes, Windrose enables third parties to maintain the fleet for decades, a critical factor for heavy-duty logistics.
Design intent supports long-term repair
The released files are in a native format that includes the full history of how each part was built, including dimensions and constraints. As reported by Electrek, this level of detail is crucial because standard export formats often strip away the parametric data needed for accurate reproduction. This ensures that a machine shop can recreate a specific bracket or mount with high precision years after the original production line has closed.
The package also includes an assembly tree detailing how nearly 2,000 sub-components fit together across 97 major assemblies. This structured data helps technicians understand the vehicle's architecture, making it easier to identify which parts are interchangeable and how they interact within the larger system.
Terms allow free modification and repair
Windrose explicitly states that owners and independent repairers can use these files to service, modify, or replace parts without seeking permission or paying fees. The company frames this as removing practical obstacles to repair rather than granting a special favor. This policy aligns with existing consumer rights in many jurisdictions but goes further by actively providing the necessary technical data.
However, there is a clear boundary for those wishing to build new trucks. While repair and customization are open, manufacturing complete vehicles from these designs requires a separate agreement with Windrose. The company describes this as a reasonable conversation rather than a free download, protecting its commercial interests while still supporting the after-market repair ecosystem.
Reducing dependency on the manufacturer
Heavy trucks are expected to operate for up to fifteen years, a period that outlasts many new automotive startups. By making the parts data available, Windrose addresses the fear that customers will be stranded without support if the company ceases operations. CEO Wen Han emphasized that the trucks should outlive the company's ability to support them directly.
This strategy shifts the balance of power toward the fleet owner. Instead of relying solely on the manufacturer for every minor fix, owners can source parts from local fabricators or independent specialists. This approach potentially lowers long-term maintenance costs and increases the resilience of the electric truck fleet against supply chain disruptions or corporate instability.
