Two new European spacecraft have reached orbit to monitor ocean temperatures and plant health, aiming to provide long-term climate data.

A Vega-C rocket lifted off from French Guiana on Monday night, carrying two satellites designed to monitor the planet's environmental changes. The launch, managed by the Italian company Avio, marked the eighth flight for this specific rocket model and the second launch of 2026. The mission, designated VV30, deployed the Copernicus Sentinel-3C and the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) into orbit, both of which are now operational and sending back initial data.

Sentinel-3C focuses on ocean and atmospheric conditions, while FLEX is dedicated to tracking the health of vegetation. Tracking ocean heat and sea levels

The Sentinel-3C spacecraft, weighing over 1,100 kilograms, is the third in its series and is designed to replace its predecessors, which are nearing the end of their operational lives. It uses optical sensors, radar, and altimetry to measure sea-surface topography, temperature, and ocean color with high precision. This data is crucial for tracking sea-level rise, a significant concern given that millions of Europeans live in coastal areas vulnerable to flooding.

The ocean absorbs roughly 90 percent of the excess heat generated by human activities, making it a central component of climate change. By providing continuous data on ocean temperatures and ecosystems, Sentinel-3C helps scientists understand how the planet is warming. Phil Evans, Director-General of EUMETSAT, emphasized that this long-term continuity of data is vital for assessing climate impacts and maintaining reliable environmental services into the 2030s.

The second satellite, FLEX, is managed by the European Space Agency and focuses on plant health. It measures chlorophyll fluorescence, a process that indicates how efficiently plants are photosynthesizing. This provides insights into vegetation stress, which can be caused by droughts, heatwaves, or other environmental pressures. By tracking these changes globally, FLEX helps researchers understand how ecosystems are responding to a changing climate.

The deployment of both satellites was successful, with signal acquisition occurring shortly after they separated from the rocket. Sentinel-3C was released first, followed by FLEX about an hour later. The smooth launch highlights the growing role of space technology in addressing environmental challenges, providing essential infrastructure for climate monitoring that supports both scientific research and policy decisions.

The launch was notable for being the second Vega-C mission managed solely by Avio, rather than jointly with Arianespace.
